Título : Economic History of Warfare and State Formation Tipo de documento: documento electrónico Autores: Jari Eloranta ; SpringerLink (Online service) ; Eric Golson ; Andrei Markevich ; Nikolaus Wolf Editorial: Singapore : Springer Singapore Fecha de publicación: 2016 Otro editor: Imprint: Springer Colección: Studies in Economic History, ISSN 2364-1797 Número de páginas: XXII, 283 p. 37 illus., 15 illus. in color Il.: online resource ISBN/ISSN/DL: 978-981-10-1605-9 Idioma : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: World history Political theory economy politics Politics and war Economic Economics History Economy Military Defence Studies Theory History, Global Transnational Clasificación: 330 Economía en general Resumen: This edited volume represents the latest research on intersections of war, state formation, and political economy, i.e., how conflicts have affected short- and long-run development of economies and the formation (or destruction) of states and their political economies. The contributors come from different fields of social and human sciencies, all featuring an interdisciplinary approach to the study of societal development. The types of big issues analyzed in this volume include the formation of European and non-European states in the early modern and modern period, the emergence of various forms of states and eventually modern democracies with extensive welfare states, the violent upheavals that influenced these processes, the persistence of dictatorships and non-democratic forms of government, and the arrival of total war and its consequences, especially in the context of twentieth-century world wars. One of the key themes is the dichotomy between democracies and dictatorships; namely, what were the origins of their emergence and evolution, why did some revolutions succeed and other fail, and why did democracies, on the whole, emerge victorious in the twentieth-century age of total wars? The contributions in this book are written with academic and non-academic audiences in mind, and both will find the broad themes discussed in this volume intuitive and useful. Nota de contenido: Part I Wars and State Formation in the Short and Long Run -- 1 Paths to Inclusive Political Institutions (Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson) -- 2 States and Development: Early Modern India, China and Great Divergence (Bishnupriya Gupta, Debin Ma and Tirthankar Roy) -- Part II Political Economy of Democracies and Dictatorships -- 3 Decentralization, Fiscal Structure, and Local State Capacity in Late-Imperial Russia (Steven Nafziger) -- 4 Historicizing Divergence: A Comparative Analysis of the Revolutionary Crises in Russia and Finland (Pavel Osinsky and Jari Eloranta) -- 5 Repression and Punishment under Stalin: Evidence from the Soviet Archives (Andrei Markevich) -- Part III Economic History of the World Wars -- 6 Myths of the Great War (Mark Harrison) -- 7 War and Inflation in the United States from the Revolution to the Persian Gulf War (Hugh Rockoff) -- 8 Lessons Learned? British Mobilisation for the Two World Wars (Stephen Broadberry and Peter Howlett) -- 9 World War II and US Economic Performance (Price V. Fishback and Taylor Jaworski) -- 10 The Mirage of the German Armament Miracle in World War II (Jonas Scherner and Jochen Streb) .-11 Neutrality in War (Eric Golson). Industrial districts, which refer to the geographical concentration of enterprises producing similar or closely related commodities in a small area, play a significant role in the development of manufacturing industries not only historically in Europe and Japan but also at present in emerging East Asian economies, such as China and Vietnam and low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The book identifies similarities in the development patterns of industrial districts in history and the present and analyzes the reasons for these similarities. More specifically, the book examines whether Marshallian agglomeration economies provide sufficient explanations and seeks to deepen understanding about the important factors that are missing. Despite the common issues addressed by economic historians and development economists regarding the advantages of industrial districts for industrial development, discussion of these issues between the two groups of researchers has been largely absent, or at best weak. The purpose of this book is to integrate the results of case studies by economic historians interested in France, Spain, and Japan and those by development economists interested in the contemporary industries still developing in China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tanzania, and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Nota de contenido: Part I Introduction -- 1 Beyond Marshallian Agglomeration Economies -- 2 Toward a New Paradigm of the Long-Term Development of Industrial Districts -- Part II Pivotal Role of Technology Transfer -- 3 Technology Transfer and the Early Development of the Cotton Textile Industry in 19th Century Spain -- 4 Contrasting Development Paths of Silk-Weaving Districts in Modern Japan -- 5 Emergence and Subsequent Development of Garment Clusters in Bangladesh and Tanzania -- Part III Central Role of Producer Cooperatives -- 6 Trade Association and Economic Regulation in the Lyons Fabrique: From the 1860s to the 1920s -- 7 Development of High-Value Agricultural Districts: The Role of Producer Cooperatives in Japan and Developing Countries -- Part IV Supporting Role of Local Government -- 8 Industrial Districts in Europe: Policy Lessons for Developing Countries? -- 9 Promotion of the Weaving Districts in Modern Japan -- 10 Low-Quality Crisis and Quality Upgrading: The Case of Industrial Clusters in Zhejiang Province En línea: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-981-10-0182-6 Link: https://biblioteca.cunef.edu/gestion/catalogo/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=41854 Industrial Districts in History and the Developing World [documento electrónico] / Tomoko Hashino ; SpringerLink (Online service) ; Keijiro Otsuka . - Singapore : Springer Singapore : Imprint: Springer, 2016 . - XVI, 194 p. 15 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource. - (Studies in Economic History, ISSN 2364-1797) .

The development of foreign trade in East Asia, the relations between industrialization and consumption in Korea, the transactions in fertilizers and the development of small-scale industries in Taiwan are precisely examined. At present, East Asia is a major economic center of the world. It is necessary to look closely not only at both sides of the "exploitation or development under colonization" paradigm but also at the prewar factors that spurred East Asian economic growth in the postwar decades. A noteworthy characteristic of the Japanese colonial empire was the close economic and geographic relations among Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the northeastern region of China. Economic integration within the empire strengthened considerably in the interwar years and remained high even during the war as compared to that in European countries and their colonies. What was the irreversible change in each colonial economy by means of forced incorporation into the Japanese empire? What was the impact on economic subjects such as merchants, manufacturers, managers, and workers through the colonial regime? This book provides readers with broad perspectives that are indispensable given that the factors discussed herein are the historical origins of current issues Nota de contenido: Chapter 1 Introduction -- Part ?: Problems of Economic Development in the Japanese Empire -- Chapter 2 The Formation of Capitalism in East Asia -- Chapter 3 The Shifting Axis of Specialization within the Japanese Empire: A Study of Railway Distribution of Cereals in Colonial Korea -- Chapter 4 Industrialization and the Rice-Processing Industry in Taiwan under Japanese Rule, 1895-1945 -- Chapter 5 The Peasants' Dilemma: Finance and Fraud Problems in Purchasing Fertilizer in Taiwan (1910-1930s) -- Part ?: Book Reviews -- Chapter 6 Review of Nak Nyeon Kim, Nihon Teikokushugika no Chosen Keizai (The Korean Economy under the Japanese Rule) -- Chapter 7 Review of Chaisung Lim, Senji Keizai to Tetsudo Unei (Wartime Economy and Railroad Operations) -- Chapter 8 Review of Hirokazu Hirai, Nihon Shokuminchi Zaiseishi Kenkyu (Study on the History of Finance of Japanese Colonial Governments) En línea: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-4-431-55927-6 Link: https://biblioteca.cunef.edu/gestion/catalogo/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=41824 Economic Activities Under the Japanese Colonial Empire [documento electrónico] / Sawai, Minoru ; SpringerLink (Online service) . - Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer, 2016 . - X, 154 p. 20 illus : online resource. - (Monograph Series of the Socio-Economic History Society, Japan, ISSN 2364-2394) .
