This is an outgrowth of the session by the same name which took place during the eighth international, interdisciplinary conference “Nexus 2010: Relationships between Architecture and Mathematics, held in Porto, Portugal, in June 2010. Today computer science is an integral part of even strictly historical investigations, such as those concerning the construction of vaults, where the computer is used to survey the existing building, analyse the data and draw the ideal solution. What the papers in this issue make especially evident is that information technology has had an impact at a much deeper level as well: architecture itself can now be considered as a manifestation of information and as a complex system. Título : Architectural Tourism : Building for Urban Travel Destinations Tipo de documento: documento electrónico Autores: Jan Specht ; SpringerLink (Online service) Editorial: Wiesbaden : Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Fecha de publicación: 2014 Otro editor: Imprint: Springer Gabler Número de páginas: XIV, 199 p. 115 illus Il.: online resource ISBN/ISSN/DL: 978-3-658-06024-4 Idioma : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: Business Tourism Management Architecture Urban planning City and Architecture, general Urbanism Clasificación: 658 Empresas. Organización de empresas Resumen: Since the early times of travelling architecture does constitute an important force of attraction and a vital element in marketing. Until today destinations try to increase their market positions by means of the development and restoration of the built environment. However, architecture is characterised by an enduring presence with impacts on visitors and residents alike. Hence, on a sustainable basis it needs to chime with place and situation. Where modesty might be suitable for one destination, spectacular architecture could be a transformation catalyst or unique selling proposition for another. Destination developers have to be aware of the local requirements as well as the reciprocal relationship between the modern practice of tourism and the built environment. To address the complexity of architectural tourism, throughout the book this topic is subject of a controversial discussion and approached with a contextual and interdisciplinary view. Contents Tourism and the Built Environment Architectural Tourism in the Spatial and Temporal Urban Context Contemporary Architecture and the Destination Image Architectural Tourism and the Spectaculture Target Groups Researchers, lecturers and students of tourism, architecture, urbanism and marketing Planners, developers, marketers and managers of travel destinations, Tourists interested in architecture About the Author Dr. Jan Specht is Professor of Business Administration at IUBH International University in Munich, Germany. Título : Digital Fabrication Tipo de documento: documento electrónico Autores: SpringerLink (Online service) ; Kim Williams Editorial: Basel : Springer Basel Fecha de publicación: 2012 Otro editor: Imprint: Birkhäuser Colección: Nexus Network Journal Número de páginas: V, 177 p Il.: online resource ISBN/ISSN/DL: 978-3-0348-0582-7 Idioma : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: Mathematics Architecture Mathematics, general Architecture, Clasificación: 51 Matemáticas Resumen: The Winter 2012 (vol. 14 no. 3) issue of the Nexus Network Journal features seven original papers dedicated to the theme “Digital Fabrication”. Digital fabrication is changing architecture in fundamental ways in every phase, from concept to artifact. Projects growing out of research in digital fabrication are dependent on software that is entirely surface-oriented in its underlying mathematics. Decisions made during design, prototyping, fabrication and assembly rely on codes, scripts, parameters, operating systems and software, creating the need for teams with multidisciplinary expertise and different skills, from IT to architecture, design, material engineering, and mathematics, among others The papers grew out of a Lisbon symposium hosted by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitario de Lisboa entitled “Digital Fabrication – A State of the Art”. The issue is completed with four other research papers which address different mathematical instruments applied to architecture, including geometric tracing systems, proportional systems, descriptive geometry and correspondence analysis. The issue concludes with a book review Nota de contenido: Letter from the Guest Editor -- Kim Williams: Digital Fabrication -- Alexandra Paio, Sara Eloy, Vasco Moreira Rato, Ricardo Resende Maria João de Oliveira: Prototyping Vitruvius, New Challenges: Digital Education, Research and Practice -- Kevin R. Klinger: Design-Through-Production Formulations -- Bob Sheil: Manufacturing Bespoke Architecture -- Tomas Diez: Personal Fabrication: Fab Labs as Platforms for Citizen-Based Innovation, from Microcontrollers to Cities -- Gabriela Celani: Digital Fabrication Laboratories: Pedagogy and Impacts on Architectural Education -- Tobias Bonwetsch: Robotic Assembly Processes as a Driver in Architectural Design -- Aineias Oikonomou: Design and Tracing of Post-Byzantine Churches in Northwestern Greece -- Farah Habib, Iraj Etesam, S. Hadi Ghoddusifar, Nahid Mohajeri: Correspondence Analysis: A New Method for Analyzing Qualitative Data in Architecture -- Francisco Roldán: Method of Modulation and Sizing of Historic Architecture -- Riccardo Migliari: Descriptive Geometry: From its Past to its Future -- José Pedro Sousa: Material Customization: Digital Fabrication Workshop at ISCTE/IUL -- Kim Williams: Review of Galileo’s Muse: Renaissance Mathematics and the Arts by Mark A. Peterson. Título : Geometries of Rhetoric Tipo de documento: documento electrónico Autores: SpringerLink (Online service) ; Robert Kirkbride Editorial: Basel : Birkhäuser Basel Fecha de publicación: 2010 Otro editor: Imprint: Birkhäuser Colección: Nexus Network Journal num. 12,3 Número de páginas: 535 p Il.: online resource ISBN/ISSN/DL: 978-3-0346-0522-9 Idioma : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: Mathematics Architecture Mathematics, general Architecture, Architectural History and Theory Clasificación: 51 Matemáticas Resumen: We grasp and transform the world through interplays of quantification and qualification. The cross pollination of geometric and literary figures is deeply embedded in our cognitive habits, instruments of inquiry and the constructed environment. Through time, thought has reflected on the visible processes and products of material craft to explain and train the invisible workings of the mind. Recursively, material craft embodies a tradition of splitting ideas into categorical parts and compositional units for reassembly. Although the mathematical and verbal arts are often placed in contrast, human inventions manifest a weave of alphanumerics. Mythic parables, geometric proofs, memory arts, poems, algorithms, buildings and cities emerge from the intercourse of measure and explication. This special issue of the Nexus Network Journal considers architectonic examples of past, present and potential geometries of rhetoric Nota de contenido: Letter from the Guest Editor -- Geometries of Rhetoric: An Introduction -- Geometries of Rhetoric -- “A Strange Catalogue of Things” -- Chiasmus, Artificial Memory, and the Arts of Arrangement -- Geometries of Reading, Light of Learning: Louis I.
